The Bermuda Rugby Union invited our Boston RFC college players to participate in their first annual Ariel ReInsurance Collegiate 7s tournament. Having accepted early, the brackets filled quickly, containing some of the top college teams in the country, including Kutztwon, Dartmouth and Notre Dame College, as well as the Bermuda Nat’l U23 team.
The BRFC panel consisted of a group of local players from New England Colleges. Not having played together since last summer, the boys were a bit rusty in match number one on Friday night, pitted against USA rugby powerhouse Kutztown. After a shaky 1st half , the lads settled down and lost 25-0; not bad, considering. Dartmouth was up next, and the guys started to gel, defeating Dartmouth 19-12. A fresh Yale team was next on the schedule, with the Bulldogs coming out on top in a very close match.
After being ranked #10 of 12 coming into the tournament, Boston’s scores and Friday victory moved them up to #7, and a first game matchup against Kutztwon again. Boston dominated ball handling for the entire first 5 minutes and took the lead after 10 phases. Boston would score again and lead 10-5 at the half. A major upset was in the making, but unfortunately Kutztwon figured us out and went on to win 4 tries to 2. But the Boston Collegian’s confidence and fluidity was gaining momentum with every half. Yale was up next, and Boston’s growing strength continued with a solid 22-5 win, putting us in the Plate Final against a Notre Dame College team that made it to the Las Vegas 7s Finals the week before. ND came out strong, and a 17-0 halftime deficit looked gloomy. Boston regrouped at halftime, dug down deep, and came out of the gates storming, scoring three quick tries and two conversions to win the Plate in a most extraordinary comeback, and placing Boston as the #5 seed overall in the tournament, behind nationally ranked Kutztwon, Dartmouth, Stony Brook and Bermuda Nationals.
The boys from Boston did indeed leave their mark on the island, and were also named best overall Social Side of the tournament. Big thanks to Boston RFC for their support, Bermuda Rugby Union for inviting us (and back next year!), Ariel Re-Insurance Company for their sponsorship, and all the players and coaches who made this a weekend of rugby 7s to remember.
