Boston Rugby Club took a strong squad down to New York City this weekend to compete in the Four Leaf Fifteens Tournament.
With snowfall through Friday night, the team arrived to 3 inches of snow on the pitches at Randall's Island, but this made little difference to the commitment of the 25 men who had made the trip down.
The team played 3x 40 minute games winning all 3:
Starting strong against the hosting team, The Village lions, Boston quickly went ahead 19-0 in the first two minutes, a fight back from the Lions and some poor defence from Boston let us down in the second half, giving up 2 tries (one converted) to finish with a 19-12 win.
In the second match we played Mystic River RFC and in a much improved effort, we showed some real potential for the season going up 19-0 with some good phase play and a defensive performance that left the Mystic River team out of ideas. Unfortunately, on the last play of the game, the Mystic boys found a hole in Boston's defense and scored under the posts ending the match 19-7.
In the final game against Fairfield, 6 forwards from AIC started the match with a Boston Backline and Barrett and Ben leading the forwards. By now the field conditions were vastly improved and Boston took full advantage of the fresh legs, putting 30 unanswered points on the opposition with some great team rugby.
A successful preseason event for the club, some strong performances from new players which will provide a few selection headaches for the coaches, no doubt. The team travels to Rocky Gorge, Washington, D.C. next weekend for final preparations before the Spring Season begins against Old Blue.
